STEM careers in academia and industry

The purpose of this series is to create a platform for the participants to explore exciting topics in STEM and the career prospects around each topic, such as algorithms, artificial intelligence, big data and analytics, complex networks, cyber security, engineering, machine learning, and operations research. Each webinar will be led by an expert in the field. We are hoping this series will give our participants a better understanding of the topic under discussion, the study paths that can lead to them, the key skills that are needed, and the opportunities and challenges around this topic.

PAST WEBINARS
APPLIED
MACHINE
LEARNING

Date: 22 June 2020

Time: 2:00 PM (GMT+1)

Speaker: Dr. Simon Rogers

Simon is a senior lecturer in the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow. Since his PhD work, he has developed and applied machine learning approaches in different levels of -omics data analysis, including transcriptomics, proteomics, and, in particular, mass spectrometry based metabolomics. He has considerable experience in the teaching of machine learning, including co-authoring a popular introductory textbook (A First Course in Machine Learning; Rogers and Girolami)

In this webinar, Simon introduced an interdisciplinary problem, some machine learning concepts, and he walked the audience through how to solve the problem using machine learning.

CYBER SECURITY

Date: 26 May 2020

Time: 14:00 BST (GMT+1)

Speaker: Professor Christopher Johnson (Head of Computing Science, University of Glasgow)

Bio: Chris Johnson develops new techniques to support the development of complex safety and security critical systems. Over the last ten years, he has helped to author guidelines for the investigation of incidents and accidents across both the European aviation and railway industries. He has worked with members of the European Space Agency and with NASA on the software engineering of future space missions. He has also worked on security concerns with global navigation satellite systems. His team have also worked with various agencies around the world to develop simulations of mass evacuations following terrorist attacks and natural disasters. He is co-chair of the scientific advisory board for the €2 billion SESAR programme for the modernisation of European Air Traffic Management.
